Biggest Swing

The film drops significantly when Depp's weird Wonka characterization and annoying Oompa Loompa songs undermine the initial visual spectacle.

The film starts strong with Burton's visual storytelling and the golden ticket setup, peaks with the magnificent factory entrance, but suffers in the middle from divisive creative choices around Wonka's characterization and musical numbers. It recovers somewhat in the final act with its family-centered resolution, though never quite recaptures the early magic.
