The film recovers from its slowest middle section to deliver its most acclaimed climactic rescue sequence.
Critics consistently praised Anderson's visual style and stop-motion craftsmanship throughout, with particular acclaim for the heist sequences and climactic rescue. While some found the middle section's pacing uneven and the Ash-Kristofferson subplot less engaging, the film's unique aesthetic, adult humor, and charming ending won over most reviewers. The consensus was that Anderson successfully translated his distinctive directorial voice to animation while creating an entertaining family film.
