Cars 2 starts promisingly with James Bond-style espionage elements but quickly falters when Mater becomes the annoying central character. The film maintains mediocre quality through its international spy adventure, with decent animation and action sequences unable to compensate for the lack of heart and emotional depth that defines Pixar's best work.
