The Abyss
A civilian oil rig crew is recruited to conduct a search and rescue effort when a nuclear submarine mysteriously sinks. One diver soon finds himself on a spectacular odyssey 25,000 feet below the ocean's surface where he confronts a mysterious force that has the power to change the world or destroy it.

Lindsey drowns herself to save Bud from flooding submersible
Lieutenant Coffey takes submersible to recover Trident warhead
The film jumps from the relatively weak military action elements to the stunning water tentacle encounter that showcased Cameron's visual mastery.
The Abyss builds from a strong mysterious opening through increasingly intense underwater drama, peaking with Lindsey's emotionally devastating sacrifice sequence. While reviewers consistently praised Cameron's technical mastery and the lead performances, some felt the military thriller elements were less compelling than the alien mystery, and the ending divided critics between those who found it transcendent and those who felt it was too schmaltzy.
