The film peaks during the spectacular Manhattan flood sequence then drops significantly during the middle rescue mission as it shifts from global spectacle to more conventional thriller territory.

The Day After Tomorrow starts strong with impressive disaster spectacle that reviewers universally praised, particularly the New York flooding sequence. The film loses momentum in its second half as it shifts focus from global catastrophe to a more conventional rescue mission, though it recovers somewhat with strong visual effects in the climax. Critics consistently noted that while the science is questionable and characters underdeveloped, the spectacular effects and serious environmental message make it an entertaining disaster film.
