Cleopatra
Determined to hold on to the throne, Cleopatra seduces the Roman emperor Julius Caesar. When Caesar is murdered, she redirects her attentions to his general, Marc Antony, who vows to take power—but Caesar’s successor has other plans.
Critics Sentiment
Cleopatra arrives in Rome in lavish procession
Antony and Cleopatra reconcile their love affair
The film peaks with Cleopatra's spectacular entrance into Rome then gradually declines through the melodramatic Antony romance before recovering for the tragic finale.
Critics consistently praised the film's spectacular production values and Rex Harrison's commanding Caesar performance in the first half. The second half suffered from Burton's less compelling Antony and excessive romantic melodrama, though it recovered with strong tragic moments. Despite extensive cuts and pacing issues, reviewers recognized it as a visually stunning epic that showcased Hollywood craftsmanship at its peak.
