Hapless museum night watchman Larry Daley must help his living, breathing exhibit friends out of a pickle now that they've been transferred to the archives at the Smithsonian Institution. Larry's (mis)adventures this time include close encounters with Amelia Earhart, Abe Lincoln and Ivan the Terrible.

The film jumps from its weakest point with Larry's unconvincing career change to its peak when Amy Adams enters as Amelia Earhart.
The sequel starts weakly with forced setup and continuity issues, peaks strongly in the middle with Amy Adams and Hank Azaria's standout performances, then gradually declines as it becomes overcrowded with characters and loses the charm of the original. Reviewers consistently praised the new cast additions while lamenting the underuse of beloved returning characters and the film's lack of the first movie's magic.
