The film starts strong with an atmospheric and well-executed sorcerer resurrection sequence that reviewers consistently praised. However, it quickly deteriorates through the middle sections due to poor character development, problematic treatment of women, and weak storytelling, before recovering somewhat in the final action sequences. Critics appreciated the camp value and gore but found the overall execution lacking compared to contemporaries like Conan the Barbarian.
