The Wrestler
Aging wrestler Randy "The Ram" Robinson is long past his prime but still ready and rarin' to go on the pro-wrestling circuit. After a particularly brutal beating, however, Randy hangs up his tights, pursues a serious relationship with a long-in-the-tooth stripper, and tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter. But he can't resist the lure of the ring and readies himself for a comeback.
Critics Sentiment
Randy performs final Ram Jam despite heart failure
Randy gets drunk and misses dinner with Stephanie
The film drops to its lowest point during Randy's self-destructive binge but soars to transcendent heights in the final wrestling match.
Critics consistently praised Mickey Rourke's authentic, career-defining performance and Aronofsky's respectful portrayal of wrestling culture. The film builds emotional power through Randy's failed attempts at civilian life, culminating in a universally acclaimed ending that critics found both tragic and triumphant. While some found certain dramatic beats predictable, the overall sentiment remained highly positive due to the raw honesty of the performances.
