The film drops from its battle sequence highs to its lowest point during the slower philosophical middle section dealing with personal losses.
Critics consistently praised Malick's visual poetry and philosophical depth, with the battle sequences earning universal acclaim for their intensity and humanity. However, many found the film's three-hour runtime and heavy philosophical voice-overs occasionally pretentious and slow, creating a polarized but generally positive reception. The film's meditation on war, nature, and humanity resonated strongly with those willing to engage with its unconventional approach.
