Autumn Sonata
After a seven-year absence, Charlotte Andergast travels to Sweden to reunite with her daughter Eva. The pair have a troubled relationship: Charlotte sacrificed the responsibilities of motherhood for a career as a classical pianist. Over an emotional night, the pair reopen the wounds of the past. Charlotte gets another shock when she finds out that her mentally impaired daughter, Helena, is out of the asylum and living with Eva.
Critics Sentiment
Eva confronts Charlotte about neglect and forced abortion
Charlotte departs asking why Helena couldn't die
The film peaks during Eva's devastating confrontation with Charlotte about maternal neglect, then drops as Charlotte's callous departure comment about Helena reveals her unchanged selfishness.
Critics consistently praised the film's emotional intensity and powerhouse performances, particularly the piano scene and mother-daughter confrontation. While some found the dialogue occasionally theatrical, most reviewers considered it a masterpiece of intimate family drama. The film maintains high critical regard throughout, with only minor dips during Charlotte's most unsympathetic moments.
