Lee meets ex-wife Randi who apologizes tearfully
Lee Chandler works as janitor in Quincy basement apartment
The film's most dramatic shift occurs when the house fire tragedy is revealed, transforming audience understanding of Lee's character from antisocial loner to deeply traumatized father.
Manchester by the Sea builds slowly from an understated character study to devastating emotional peaks, particularly around the house fire revelation and Randi encounter. Critics consistently praised Affleck's nuanced performance and Lonergan's realistic approach to grief, though some found the opening act slow. The film maintains high critical regard throughout its second half, avoiding typical redemption arcs in favor of authentic human complexity.
