The Conformist
A weak-willed Italian man becomes a fascist flunky who goes abroad to arrange the assassination of his old teacher, now a political dissident.
Review Sentiment
Quadri and Anna are murdered in the snowy alpine forest
Marcello lives conventionally until Mussolini's regime falls in 1943
The film drops significantly from the climactic forest assassination sequence to the transitional period showing Marcello's conventional life.
The Conformist maintains consistently high critical reception throughout most of its runtime, with particular peaks during the childhood trauma flashback and the visually stunning dance hall and assassination sequences. While some reviewers found certain political elements ambiguous and the transitional sections less compelling, the film's visual mastery and psychological complexity earned widespread critical acclaim.
