Mysterious Dr. Zempf visits Humbert about school play
The film drops significantly during Peter Sellers' Dr. Zempf sequence before recovering for the emotional reunion with adult Dolores.
Critics praised Kubrick's sophisticated handling of controversial material and the stellar performances by Mason, Winters, and Lyon, but consistently criticized Peter Sellers' over-the-top portrayal of Quilty as disruptive to the film's tone. The emotional reunion sequence was universally acclaimed as the film's dramatic peak, while Sellers' disguised appearances were seen as the weakest elements.
