House of 1000 Corpses starts strong with Sid Haig's charismatic Captain Spaulding and an effective horror premise, but loses momentum as it devolves into gratuitous violence and stylistic excess. While horror fans appreciated Rob Zombie's throwback aesthetic and some genuinely disturbing performances, many critics found the film became tiresome and incoherent in its latter half. The movie succeeds as a cult curiosity but fails to maintain the quality of its promising opening.
