The Mule
Earl Stone, a man in his eighties, is broke, alone, and facing foreclosure of his business when he is offered a job that simply requires him to drive. Easy enough, but, unbeknownst to Earl, he's just signed on as a drug courier for a Mexican cartel. He does so well that his cargo increases exponentially, and Earl hit the radar of hard-charging DEA agent Colin Bates.
Critics Sentiment
Earl Stone chooses to stay with dying Mary instead of completing his delivery
Earl's flower farm goes bankrupt and his home faces foreclosure
The film's biggest emotional shift occurs when Earl abandons his delivery to care for dying Mary, transforming from criminal enterprise to profound family reconciliation.
The Mule follows a steady upward trajectory as Earl becomes increasingly successful as a drug mule, peaking during his powerful choice to prioritize family over criminal obligations when Mary is dying. While critics found some elements underdeveloped, particularly the supporting characters, they consistently praised Eastwood's central performance and the film's exploration of redemption and family reconciliation. The emotional core of the story resonated strongly with reviewers despite occasional tonal inconsistencies and pacing issues.
