Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Raoul Duke and his attorney Dr. Gonzo drive a red convertible across the Mojave desert to Las Vegas with a suitcase full of drugs to cover a motorcycle race. As their consumption of drugs increases at an alarming rate, the stoned duo trash their hotel room and fear legal repercussions. Duke begins to drive back to L.A., but after an odd run-in with a cop, he returns to Sin City and continues his wild drug binge.
Critics Sentiment
Duke sees hotel bar patrons as reptilian creatures
Duke tries adrenochrome and experiences horrifying bad trip
The film plunges from the iconic White Rabbit bathtub scene (8.3) through increasingly uncomfortable middle sections to the genuinely disturbing adrenochrome sequence (5.8), representing a 2.5-point drop that mirrors the protagonists' descent from manic highs to nightmarish lows.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas opens with widely praised visual brilliance and psychedelic imagery that captivates critics, particularly the reptilian hallucination sequences. However, the film's repetitive drug use and increasingly disturbing content causes reviewer enthusiasm to wane through the middle sections, hitting its lowest point during the adrenochrome nightmare. The film recovers in its final act with more dramatically compelling scenes and a satisfying thematic conclusion that reinforces its cult status despite polarized critical reception.
