A fateful night in 1959, four people die when the bus they are riding crashes. They continue as ghosts; their souls become eternally entwined to the life of a child born at the moment of their deaths as his guardians. Baby Thomas grows up to be a businessman who has memories of his playmates, but assumes they are products of his youthful imagination. When the ghosts realize they need Thomas' help to move on to the afterlife, they decide to make an appearance once more.

Biggest Swing

The film jumps dramatically from Thomas's isolated adult life to soaring when the spirits return and begin possessing his body, with critics noting this is where the movie truly takes off.

Heart and Souls follows a clear emotional arc from a promising but slow setup through a devastating childhood abandonment to a triumphant middle section where critics universally praised Robert Downey Jr.'s multi-character performances. The film peaks with deeply moving moments of redemption and recognition, particularly Penny discovering her son, before settling into a satisfying but slightly rushed conclusion.
