Critics Sentiment
Rico Parra shoots Juanita to save her from torture
Film ends abruptly without satisfying climax or resolution
The film peaks with Juanita's acclaimed death scene but then steadily declines through sluggish pacing to an universally criticized abrupt ending.
Topaz opens strongly with an exciting Copenhagen defection and maintains decent momentum through the Hotel Theresa mission, reaching its creative peak with the widely praised death of Juanita in Cuba. However, the film suffers from pacing issues and an overcomplicated plot in its final act, culminating in an abrupt and unsatisfying ending that left critics frustrated. While containing signature Hitchcock visual moments, it lacks the consistent tension and compelling resolution of his better works.
