Flight
Commercial airline pilot Whip Whitaker has a problem with drugs and alcohol, though so far he's managed to complete his flights safely. His luck runs out when a disastrous mechanical malfunction sends his plane hurtling toward the ground. Whip pulls off a miraculous crash-landing that results in only six lives lost. Shaken to the core, Whip vows to get sober -- but when the crash investigation exposes his addiction, he finds himself in an even worse situation.
Critics Sentiment
Whip executes inverted flight maneuver during catastrophic dive
Whip discovers unlocked minibar and goes on drinking binge
The dramatic plunge from the spectacular plane crash sequence (9.5) to Whip's rock bottom hotel binge (3.5), showing his complete moral and personal collapse.
Flight follows a steep emotional descent mirroring its protagonist's addiction arc, opening with spectacular crash heroics that reviewers universally praised before gradually declining as Whip's alcoholism destroys his relationships and credibility. The film reaches its lowest point when Whip binges before his crucial hearing, then recovers with his powerful confession and redemptive ending, though critics were divided on whether the resolution felt earned or too convenient.
