Critics Sentiment
Paul undergoes the irreversible downsizing procedure at Leisureland
Dr. Asbjørnsen announces humanity will soon become extinct
The film drops dramatically from the engaging downsizing process (7.5) to the heavy-handed extinction announcement (4.1), representing critics' frustration with the shift from clever sci-fi premise to preachy climate messaging.
Critics universally praised the first half of Downsizing for its original premise and strong execution, with the downsizing process itself being particularly well-received. However, the film suffered a steep decline in the second half as it abandoned its central concept for heavy-handed environmental messaging and unfocused plotting. While Hong Chau's performance was consistently lauded, most reviewers felt the film squandered its enormous potential by becoming preachy and losing narrative focus.
