Tulip Fever starts promisingly with beautiful period production values and a classic romantic setup, but becomes increasingly bogged down by overcomplicated plotting and implausible subplots that strain credibility. The film hits its lowest point during the absurd fake pregnancy climax, but recovers somewhat with an unexpected and emotionally resonant ending that provides the drama's only genuine payoff.
