Wonder Boys
Grady is a 50-ish English professor who hasn't had a thing published in years—not since he wrote his award winning 'Great American Novel' 7 years ago. This weekend proves even worse than he could imagine as he finds himself reeling from one misadventure to another in the company of a new wonder boy author.
Review Sentiment
James Leer shoots the Gaskells' blind dog with a real gun
Grady's novel pages blow away in dispute over the stolen car
The film peaks with the darkly comic dog shooting incident but steadily declines through the middle act as critics felt the plot became increasingly contrived and lost focus.
Wonder Boys starts strong with excellent character setup and peaks early with its memorable dog shooting scene that critics found perversely hilarious. However, the film struggles in its middle sections as reviewers noted pacing issues, logical inconsistencies, and over-reliance on contrived plot devices. Despite these structural problems, critics consistently praised the performances, particularly Douglas and the ensemble cast, leading to generally positive but qualified reception.
