The Client
A street-wise kid, Mark Sway, sees the suicide of Jerome Clifford, a prominent Louisiana lawyer, whose current client is Barry 'The Blade' Muldano, a Mafia hit-man. Before Jerome shoots himself, he tells Mark where the body of a Senator is buried. Clifford shoots himself and Mark is found at the scene, and both the FBI and the Mafia quickly realize that Mark probably knows more than he says.
Critics Sentiment
Mark and Ricky discover Clifford attempting suicide in his car
The Sway family faces mounting pressure from all sides
The film recovers from its midpoint lull when Mark and Reggie confront Muldano at the boathouse, jumping from 6.1 to 7.3 in the climactic sequence.
The Client opens strongly with an engaging premise and excellent early character work between Sarandon and Renfro. The film sags in its middle section as critics found the legal maneuvering and plot logic questionable, before recovering with an exciting climax and emotionally satisfying conclusion. Despite plot holes and some stereotypical characters, reviewers consistently praised the central performances, particularly Sarandon's powerhouse turn as the determined lawyer.
