Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Lorelei Lee is a beautiful showgirl engaged to be married to the wealthy Gus Esmond, much to the disapproval of Gus' rich father, Esmond Sr., who thinks that Lorelei is just after his money. When Lorelei goes on a cruise accompanied only by her best friend, Dorothy Shaw, Esmond Sr. hires Ernie Malone, a private detective, to follow her and report any questionable behavior that would disqualify her from the marriage.
Critics Sentiment
Lorelei performs the iconic Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend number
Credit canceled, the women are evicted from their hotel
The dramatic jump from being stranded and evicted in Paris (6.8) to Monroe's career-defining Diamonds performance (9.2) represents a 2.4 point swing.
Critics consistently praise the film as delightful escapist entertainment anchored by Monroe and Russell's stellar chemistry and performances. While the plot is deemed formulaic and the third act somewhat contrived, the musical numbers, especially Monroe's iconic 'Diamonds' performance, elevate it to classic status. The film succeeds as glamorous Hollywood spectacle with sharp dialogue and eye-popping visuals.
