Birdee Pruitt has been humiliated on live television by her best friend, Connie, who's been sleeping with Birdee's husband, Bill. Birdee tries starting over with her daughter, Bernice, by returning to her small Texas hometown, but she's faced with petty old acquaintances who are thrilled to see Birdee unhappy -- except for her friend Justin. As he helps Birdee get back on her feet, love begins to blossom.

Peak Moment

Bill tells Bernice he has no room for her in his new life

8.5at 1h 24m
Lowest Moment

Bill arrives at Ramona's funeral asking Birdee for divorce

Biggest Swing

The film's most dramatic shift occurs when Bill's funeral appearance and divorce request (4.0) is immediately followed by Bernice's devastating rejection scene (8.5), moving from plot mechanics to genuine emotional devastation.

Hope Floats receives mixed critical reception that starts poorly with its trashy talk show opening but finds its strength in Mae Whitman's standout performance as the heartbroken daughter. The film's emotional core lies in the family relationships rather than the unconvincing romance, with critics consistently praising the authentic moments between mother and daughter while remaining divided on the central love story.
