The Fly
Industrialist François Delambre is called late at night by his sister-in-law, Helene, who tells him that she has just killed her husband. Reluctant at first, she eventually explains to the police that he invented a matter transportation apparatus and, while experimenting on himself, a fly entered the chamber.
Critics Sentiment
Tiny Andre trapped in spider web screaming for help
White headed fly slips through window crack
The film swings dramatically from the tragic loss of hope when the fly escapes (6.1) to the iconic spider web climax (9.1), creating the most memorable horror moment in 1950s cinema.
Critics consistently praise The Fly as a sophisticated horror film that builds tension through character development and believable scientific progression. The film peaks with two universally acclaimed iconic moments - the fly head reveal and the spider web scene - that have haunted viewers for decades. While some find pacing issues in the middle sections, reviewers appreciate the film's restraint, strong performances, and philosophical depth about scientific responsibility.
