Chariots of Fire
In the class-obsessed and religiously divided UK of the early 1920s, two determined young runners train for the 1924 Paris Olympics. Eric Liddell, a devout Christian born to Scottish missionaries in China, sees running as part of his worship of God's glory and refuses to train or compete on the Sabbath. Harold Abrahams overcomes anti-Semitism and class bias, but neglects his beloved sweetheart in his single-minded quest.
Critics Sentiment
Eric Liddell defeats Americans in 400 meter race
Abrahams and Sybil relationship develops slowly
From the slow character development phase (6.0) to Liddell's divine inspiration speech (7.8), representing the film's shift from plodding setup to meaningful thematic content.
Critics consistently praise Chariots of Fire's iconic opening, powerful themes, and triumphant Olympic sequences, while noting significant pacing issues in the middle third. The film builds from atmospheric setup through character-driven drama to emotionally satisfying climaxes. Despite some finding it overly British and slow, most reviewers appreciate its respectful treatment of faith, integrity, and the different motivations that drive human excellence.
