After the Civil War, ex-Union Colonel John Henry Thomas and ex-Confederate Colonel James Langdon are leading two disparate groups of people through strife-torn Mexico. John Henry and company are bringing horses to the unpopular Mexican government for $35 a head while Langdon is leading a contingent of displaced southerners, who are looking for a new life in Mexico after losing their property to carpetbaggers. The two men are eventually forced to mend their differences in order to fight off both bandits and revolutionaries, as they try to lead their friends and kin to safety.

Biggest Swing

The film drops significantly during the over-the-top Fourth of July brawl but recovers strongly with the exciting French cavalry battle near the climax

Critics found The Undefeated to be solid, undemanding entertainment elevated by the chemistry between Wayne and Hudson, though hampered by uneven tone and pacing issues in the middle sections. The film was praised for its impressive cinematography, stirring battle sequences, and themes of post-Civil War reconciliation, but criticized for some goofy comedy elements and a somewhat predictable plot. Most reviewers appreciated it as enjoyable if not exceptional Wayne western fare.
