The Black Swan
When notorious pirate Henry Morgan is made governor of Jamaica, he enlists the help of some of his former partners in ridding the Caribbean of buccaneers. When one of them apparently abducts the previous governor's pretty daughter and joins up with the rebels, things are set for a fight.
Critics Sentiment
Jamie escapes and kills Captain Billy Leech in a sword duel
Jamie gags and kidnaps Margaret from her house against her objections
The film recovers dramatically from the controversial kidnapping sequence to the thrilling naval battle and sword fight climax, rising 3.0 points.
The Black Swan follows a classic swashbuckler arc that starts promisingly but dips significantly during the problematic romantic subplot where modern and period audiences alike found Jamie's treatment of Margaret deeply troubling. The film redeems itself in the final act with spectacular action sequences, particularly the naval battle and sword fighting that reviewers consistently praised as expertly crafted.
