Billy Bigelow has been dead for 15 years. Now outside the pearly gates, he long ago waived his right to go back to Earth for a day. He has heard that there is a problem with his family: namely with his wife Julie Bigelow, née Jordan, and his child he hasn't met. He would now like to head back to Earth to assist in rectifying the problem; but before he may go, he has to get permission from the gatekeeper by telling him his story. Adapted from the Rodgers and Hammerstein hit Broadway musical.

Biggest Swing

The film plunges from Billy's transcendent Soliloquy performance to the deeply troubling domestic violence storyline that modern audiences found unacceptable.

Carousel divides critics between appreciation for its magnificent Rodgers and Hammerstein score and discomfort with its problematic protagonist and themes. While individual musical numbers like Soliloquy and June is Bustin Out All Over receive universal praise, the overall story of domestic violence and Billy's irredeemable character creates a troubling viewing experience that hasn't aged well. The film succeeds as a showcase for exceptional music and performances but fails to make audiences care about its deeply flawed central romance.
