Critics found First Knight to be a visually appealing but uneven adaptation that succeeds in its early character establishment and Sean Connery's commanding performance as Arthur. However, the film stumbles in its middle section with melodramatic romance and weak plotting, before recovering somewhat with a satisfying climactic battle and dignified ending.
