Critics found The Next Karate Kid a formulaic but not entirely worthless entry that suffered from terrible villains and clumsy exposition early on. The Buddhist monastery sequence and Miyagi's wisdom provided the film's strongest moments, while Hilary Swank showed promise despite weak material. Most reviewers considered it better than Part III but still a disappointing end to the franchise.
