Midnight Express
Billy Hayes is caught attempting to smuggle drugs out of a country. The courts decide to make an example of him, sentencing him to more than 30 years in prison. Hayes has two opportunities for release: the appeals made by his lawyer, his family, and the American government, or the "Midnight Express".
Critics Sentiment
Billy dons guard uniform and bluffs his way out of prison to freedom
Turkish High Court overturns Billy's sentence and re-sentences him to thirty years
The devastating drop from hope to despair when Billy's four-year sentence is overturned and extended to thirty years
Midnight Express follows a powerful arc from gripping tension to crushing despair and back to triumphant catharsis. The film peaks early with its masterfully crafted opening arrest sequence, plunges to its lowest point with the sentence extension that destroys all hope, then builds to an emotionally satisfying escape that reviewers found genuinely euphoric. Despite criticisms of sensationalism and cultural stereotyping, critics consistently praised the visceral filmmaking, outstanding performances, and the film's ability to create sustained psychological impact.
