Soon it becomes clear that the brood of rodents is ready and willing to exact a vicious, deadly revenge on anyone who dares to bully their sensitive new master.
Critics Sentiment
Rats kill the cat during Michael Jackson's Ben song
Martin bludgeons Socrates to death while Willard watches
The film peaks with the acclaimed Ben song sequence but crashes when Socrates is killed, losing 4.0 points as it abandons successful dark comedy for ineffective horror.
Critics praised Crispin Glover's committed performance and the film's early dark comedy elements, particularly the memorable Ben song sequence. However, most felt the film faltered when it shifted from quirky character study to serious horror, with the ending being notably weaker than the original 1971 version.
