Wedding ceremony stopped by revelation of Bertha's existence

Biggest Swing

The film drops sharply from the romantic garden proposal to the devastating wedding interruption, falling 2.9 points as the central love story collapses.

Critics praised the early Lowood sequences with Anna Paquin as exceptional, but found the central romance between Gainsbourg and Hurt lacking in chemistry and emotional depth. The film was appreciated for its visual beauty and Gothic atmosphere, though many felt it rushed through key plot points and failed to capture the novel's psychological complexity.
