The World Is Not Enough
Greed, revenge, world dominance and high-tech terrorism – it's all in a day's work for Bond, who's on a mission to protect a beautiful oil heiress from a notorious terrorist. In a race against time that culminates in a dramatic submarine showdown, Bond works to defuse the international power struggle that has the world's oil supply hanging in the balance.
Critics Sentiment
Bond pursues the cigar girl assassin by speedboat down the Thames
Bond impales Renard with the plutonium rod and closes with the Christmas Jones pun
The film drops sharply from its peak score of 9.1 during the celebrated Thames boat chase down to 5.8 when Denise Richards appears as the widely derided nuclear physicist Dr. Christmas Jones at the Kazakhstan ICBM base.
The World Is Not Enough follows a clear arc of early triumph followed by gradual erosion: the Thames boat chase is near-universally acclaimed as one of the best sequences in Bond history, but the film struggles to sustain that energy through a middle section hampered by weak scripting and Denise Richards' unconvincing casting. Sophie Marceau's Elektra King provides a genuine late-film lift as a rare and compelling female villain, but the closing pun and underused Renard leave audiences with a sense of squandered potential, landing the film firmly in the 'decent but flawed' tier of the Brosnan era.
