Former London constable Nicholas Angel finds it difficult to adapt to his new assignment in the sleepy British village of Sandford. Not only does he miss the excitement of the big city, but he also has a well-meaning oaf for a partner. However, when a series of grisly accidents rocks Sandford, Angel smells something rotten in the idyllic village.

Biggest Swing

The film surges from its most divisive stretch (the overlong supermarket siege and chase at ~106 min, score 7.0) back up through the sea mine epilogue payoff (~116 min, score 7.8), but the largest single upward swing is the leap from the mid-film murder accumulation plateau (~65 min, 7.2) into the NWA castle revelation (~75 min, 8.2), a near full point jump as the mystery's Agatha Christie payoff lands.

Hot Fuzz opens at a high pitch with its kinetic London montage and sustains strong audience goodwill through the Sandford fish-out-of-water comedy and the warmly received DVD-bonding scenes, before the NWA revelation and the action-movie shootout deliver the film's peak euphoria. The finale's extended siege sequence is the one consistent point of friction in reviews, with many noting it runs slightly too long, but the sea mine epilogue and Danny's survival restore warmth and close the arc satisfyingly. Overall the film is received as a brilliantly cine-literate, genuinely funny genre hybrid that earns its place alongside Shaun of the Dead.
