Biggest Swing

The film surges from the divisive, cold ending (7.2) back-calculated against the climactic violence peak (9.1), a nearly two-point swing driven by the split between viewers who found Ava abandoning Caleb a brilliant thematic payoff and those who called it a muddled, unsatisfying conclusion.

Ex Machina builds steadily from an atmospheric, intriguing opening through a tightly coiled middle act of paranoia and philosophical provocation, reaching its emotional and intellectual peak in the violent climax and the twist that reframes the entire film. The ending produces the sharpest audience division, with its cold, ambiguous resolution praised by many as thematically perfect but criticized by others as abrupt and undercooked. Overall, reviewers responded to the film as a rare, disciplined piece of hard science fiction elevated by exceptional performances, a haunting score, and a willingness to ask difficult questions without easy answers.
