The Giver
In a seemingly perfect community, without war, pain, suffering, differences or choice, a young boy is chosen to learn from an elderly man about the true pain and pleasure of the "real" world.
Critics Sentiment
Jonas begins seeing color and experiencing emotions through the memories
Jonas lives in the emotionless Community with friends Asher and Fiona
The film jumps from a weak, clichéd opening to its visual and emotional peak when Jonas first experiences color and memories with the Giver.
The Giver starts weakly with typical dystopian setup but finds its footing once Jeff Bridges appears and the color/memory concept takes center stage. While the visual execution of the black-and-white to color transition earned universal praise, the film struggles with pacing issues and familiar YA tropes that prevent it from reaching its full emotional potential. Despite strong performances from Bridges and Streep, the overall experience feels rushed and lacks the deeper character connections that would have elevated the material.
