Mortal Engines
Many thousands of years in the future, Earth’s cities roam the globe on huge wheels, devouring each other in a struggle for ever diminishing resources. On one of these massive traction cities, the old London, Tom Natsworthy has an unexpected encounter with a mysterious young woman from the wastelands who will change the course of his life forever.
Critics Sentiment
London captures the small Bavarian mining town Salzhaken
Katherine learns about Valentine pushing Tom and the MEDUSA project
The film drops from its promising opening spectacle to tedious subplot exposition in the middle act, losing 2.4 points between the initial city-eating concept and Katherine's unnecessary discovery subplot.
Mortal Engines starts strong with spectacular visuals and an intriguing moving cities concept that immediately grabs attention. The film steadily loses momentum through the middle act with formulaic plotting, weak character development, and unnecessary subplots before partially recovering with Stephen Lang's compelling Shrike performance and a visually impressive final battle. Despite gorgeous production design and decent action sequences, critics consistently noted the hollow emotional core and derivative storytelling that prevented the ambitious concept from reaching its potential.
