Stoker
After India’s father dies suddenly, her uncle Charlie, whom she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother. Soon after his arrival, she begins to suspect that this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives. But instead of feeling outrage or horror, the friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.
Critics Sentiment
Charlie kills Whip while India watches and helps bury him
Aunt Gwendolyn visits and expresses suspicion about Charlie
The film jumps from its lowest point during Gwendolyn's predictable suspicious visit to its peak with the shocking and artistically executed murder of Whip.
Stoker maintains a polarizing reception throughout, with critics consistently praising Park's visual mastery and Wasikowska's performance while finding the plot predictable. The film peaks during its most disturbing sequences where Park's directorial style elevates shocking material into art. Despite technical excellence, many reviewers felt the overall experience was hollow and derivative of Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt.
