The Lone Ranger
The Texas Rangers chase down a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish, but the gang ambushes the Rangers, seemingly killing them all. One survivor is found, however, by an American Indian named Tonto, who nurses him back to health. The Ranger, donning a mask and riding a white stallion named Silver, teams up with Tonto to bring the unscrupulous gang and others of that ilk to justice.
Critics Sentiment
Epic train chase sequence set to William Tell Overture
Cavendish ambushes and kills Dan Reid's ranger posse
The film dramatically improves from its sluggish middle section to the spectacular William Tell Overture train chase finale, jumping nearly 4 points in viewer satisfaction
The Lone Ranger follows a classic three-act sentiment arc, opening with promising action before bogging down in an overly complex and slow middle section that frustrated many viewers. However, the film redeems itself with a universally praised finale featuring spectacular practical stunts and the iconic William Tell Overture train chase that reminded audiences why they came to see a big-budget western adventure. While critics were divided on Depp's Tonto and the film's tonal inconsistencies, most agreed the climax delivered the entertainment value the expensive production promised.
