Review Sentiment
Jerry activates devices that incinerate his apartment during SWAT raid
Jerry Fletcher is captured and lured into a CIA trap
The film dramatically shifts from Jerry's CIA capture (5.5) to his LSD interrogation sequence (7.2), as reviewers found the torture scene compelling despite the jarring tonal change.
Critics found Conspiracy Theory to be an entertaining but uneven thriller that benefits greatly from Mel Gibson's committed performance as the paranoid taxi driver. The film peaks during its creative middle act, particularly the apartment sequences, but suffers from pacing issues and an overly long runtime. While most reviewers praised the Gibson-Roberts chemistry and Stewart's villainous turn, many felt the conspiracy plot became convoluted and the romantic elements underdeveloped.
