Stranded in the New Mexico desert, the two catch a break when a passing truck driver offers Amy a ride to a nearby café to call for help. Meanwhile, Jeff is able to fix the car and make his way to the café, but Amy isn't there. He tracks down the trucker ― who tells the police he's never seen Jeff or his wife before. Jeff then begins a desperate, frenzied search for Amy.

Jeff deceives Earl with fake money at the bank
Amy accepts a lift from Red Barr to the diner
The film jumps from the ominous setup of Amy accepting the trucker's ride to the chilling discovery that she never appeared at the diner, creating immediate paranoid dread.
Breakdown maintains strong audience approval throughout with particular praise for J.T. Walsh's villainous performance and the masterful bank deception sequence. The film builds effectively from an atmospheric desert thriller setup to intense action sequences, though some reviewers noted implausible moments in the final act. Critics consistently praised Kurt Russell's everyman performance and the film's tight pacing without boring moments.
