Selena
In this biographical drama, Selena Quintanilla is born into a musical Mexican-American family in Texas. Her father, Abraham, realizes that his young daughter is talented and begins performing with her at small venues. She finds success and falls for her guitarist, Chris Perez, who draws the ire of her father. Seeking mainstream stardom, Selena begins recording an English-language album which, tragically, she would never complete.
Critics Sentiment
Selena wins Grammy for Best Mexican American album
Yolanda shoots Selena offscreen ending her life tragically
The film plummets from the triumphant crossover recording sessions to the underdeveloped and abrupt murder ending, dropping 3.5 points.
Reviewers found Selena to be a solid but formulaic biopic elevated by Jennifer Lopez's committed performance and Edward James Olmos's strong supporting work. The film succeeds in its concert sequences and family dynamics but suffers from an underdeveloped ending that treats Selena's murder as an afterthought. Critics consistently praised the celebration of Selena's life while lamenting the missed opportunity to properly explore the tragic conclusion.
