The film drops from its strongest point with Val Kilmer's compelling Rafto flashback (6.5) to completely losing audience engagement during Sylvia's murder sequence (4.5).
The Snowman starts promisingly with an intriguing setup and benefits from Val Kilmer's flashback performance, but rapidly deteriorates in the middle act as the plot becomes increasingly muddled and incoherent. While the final revelation provides some narrative closure, the overall experience is hampered by production issues and confused storytelling that left most critics frustrated despite the film's visual appeal.
