Internal Affairs
Keen young Raymold Avila joins the Internal Affairs Department of the Los Angeles police. He and partner Amy Wallace are soon looking closely at the activities of cop Dennis Peck whose financial holdings start to suggest something shady. Indeed Peck is involved in any number of dubious or downright criminal activities. He is also devious, a womaniser, and a clever manipulator, and he starts to turn his attention on Avila.
Critics Sentiment
First confrontation between Dennis Peck and Raymond Avilla escalates to violence
Avilla violently confronts Kathleen believing she cheated with Peck
The film peaks during the first confrontation between Peck and Avilla, then crashes when domestic violence becomes central to the plot.
Internal Affairs starts as a solid police procedural that builds effectively toward the memorable first confrontation between Gere and Garcia. However, critics noted the film becomes increasingly problematic in its second half, with violent domestic abuse sequences and an overly convoluted plot that culminates in a predictable finale. Despite these issues, Gere's villainous performance and the psychological battle between the leads kept most reviewers engaged.
