North West Mounted Police
Texas Ranger Dusty Rivers ("Isn't that a contradiction in terms?", another character asks him) travels to Canada in the 1880s in search of Jacques Corbeau, who is wanted for murder. He wanders into the midst of the Riel Rebellion, in which Métis (people of French and Native heritage) and Natives want a separate nation. Dusty falls for nurse April Logan, who is also loved by Mountie Jim Brett. April's brother is involved with Courbeau's daughter Louvette, which leads to trouble during the battles between the rebels and the Mounties. Through it all Dusty is determined to bring Corbeau back to Texas (and April, too, if he can manage it.)
Critics Sentiment
Dusty helps Mounties mount rearguard action against ambushers
Ronnie is killed by mistake while riding Dusty's horse
The film swings from its action peak during the Mountie ambush sequence to its emotional low point with Ronnie's tragic death, a drop of 2.3 points.
Critics found North West Mounted Police a mixed bag that exemplified both DeMille's strengths and weaknesses. While universally praised for spectacular action sequences, gorgeous Technicolor cinematography, and solid performances from veterans like Tamiroff and Overman, the film was consistently criticized for hammy dialogue, overacting, and slow pacing between set pieces. The consensus emerged of an entertaining but flawed spectacle that succeeds as undemanding entertainment despite its obvious shortcomings.
