Critics Sentiment
Coogan chases Ringerman on motorcycles through Fort Tryon Park
Linny and Pushie ambush Coogan at heliport enabling Ringerman to escape
The film surges from its lowest point during the heliport ambush (5.2) to excitement during the psychedelic nightclub scene and pool hall brawl (7.2 to 7.8).
Reviewers found Coogan's Bluff to be an entertaining if uneven bridge between Eastwood's western roles and his future urban cop characters. The film starts solidly with its fish-out-of-water premise but sags during romantic subplots, before building to memorable action sequences including the nightclub scene and climactic motorcycle chase. Critics appreciated its historical significance as a prototype for Dirty Harry while noting its dated elements and morally questionable protagonist.
